1968

Jim Thompson received a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Construction from Texas A&M University and joined the United States Air Force as an instructor pilot.

1973

Jim Thompson left United States Air Force to join The Henry C. Beck Co (now Beck).

1978

Jim Thompson became Vice President of Spring Valley Construction Company.

1981

Jim Thompson became Senior Vice President of Construction at The Longcrier Company.

1983

Jim Thompson saw a need for high-end tenant finish outs and founded James R. Thompson, Inc. (JRT) with the first office on Oak Grove Ave. First project was the luxury mixed use development The Crescent in Dallas, Texas. This was the beginning of Uptown Dallas revitalization.

1986

JRT was the Construction Manager for Stanley Korshak. JRT has served as General Contractor for over 75 JRT retail/showroom specialty projects. Georges Investments was the first of over 80 JRT investment clients. Tracy Locke was the first interior finishout project of over 150 professional firms.

1987

Thompson & Knight was the first of over 180 JRT law firm projects. Carrington Coleman was the first of over 320 JRT financial service projects. Southwestern Bell was the first of over 160 JRT technology projects. McKinsey & Company, Inc. was the first of over 150 JRT professional firm projects.

Tracey Poteet and Josh Cannon joined as Superintendents and are now Senior Superintendents with 34 years of experience at JRT.

1988

Micrografx was the first of over 70 JRT corporate headquarters projects. The City of Mesquite Emergency Operations Center was the first of over 45 JRT municipal/government project.

1989

Hunt Consolidated Oil was the first of over 130 JRT oil & gas and energy projects. Sonny Bryan Smokehouse was the first of over 20 JRT restaurant projects.

1990

EmCare, Inc. was the first of over 50 JRT healthcare projects.

1991

Larry Hummel joined as Superintendent. Larry retires in 2021 as Senior Superintendent after 30 years at JRT.

1992

The Arts Council of Fort Worth was the first of over 30 non-profit JRT projects.

1993

Moved office to Cole Ave.

1995

Ryan Thompson graduated from Texas A&M University and joined Turner Construction.

1996

Lance Thompson joined as Superintendent after serving in the United States Navy.

1997

The Staubach Company was the first of over 50 JRT real estate clients. Wausau Insurance was the first of over 38 JRT insurance clients. Bally's Health Club was the first JRT fitness center project.

Received first AGC Interior Summit Award for DeLoitte & Touche. See here for more awards.

2001

Ryan Thompson joined as Superintendent after gaining industry experience at Turner.

2003

The Islamic Center of Irving and St. Paul Dallas were the first religious JRT projects.

2007

Mark May joined as Chief Estimator expanding Preconstruction Services.

2009

2014

Jim Thompson passed the torch to new leadership as he transitions to CEO. Ryan Thompson was promoted to President and Todd Grogan to Vice President of Operations.

2016

First DFW Airport project: American Airlines Terminal D Lounge Project

2018

Largest project to date: American Airlines Terminal D Lounge Project

2019

Surpassed $1 Billion mark in completed projects. 2nd generation of Thompsons took over JRT ownership as Lance Thompson was promoted to Senior Project Manager and Cody Thompson joined JRT as Senior Project Manager. This is the first time the Thompson sons are all working together fulfilling their father's dream.

2020

Awarded Dallas AIA Contractor of the year.
Awarded TEXO Contractor of the year.
